Vacation Day 6
“A vacation is like love - anticipated with pleasure, experienced with discomfort, and remembered with nostalgia. ~Author Unknown”
March 6:
Grand Turks and Caicos Islands are owned by the U.K. The island of Grand Turks is
just over a mile wide and 6 miles long. It was my absolute favorite stop on the cruise.
They have no crime there, no traffic signals either. Far as I could see the only fault there
was they drive on wrong side of road, which for us Americans can be confusing even if operating a moped.
Their government is U.K. and their currency is American.
When we stopped here, we took a taxi for $5 per person to the downtown area to look around. We stopped
at the post office to send post cards. They have things displayed out in the open that you will
never see in U.S., openly displayed anyhow. Take a look at the pictures, look at them closely. If
you do not catch it, email me or call me I will tell you what it was that you missed.
After doing that and buying souveniors we got another taxi back to the port area and decided to rent
two mopeds. I have to say that was the best thing we did. We got out and saw some of the area on our
own this way without influence of a local or a tour guide.
Their horses, donkeys, and dogs are not kenneled or fenced in at all. They roam down the street with
no one turning around to see what they are doing. Other then us tourists of course. My husband and I
collected shells on the shore of the beach also. I am ready to go back to this island. I guess because
its not commercialized. A taxi driver told us that they had 6,000 residents. An article I read said just
over 3,000 residents. If I had to guess, I would say about 1,500.
We were told all their goods are shipped in from the U.S. Their gas was expensive. But if you are
riding on a moped it didn't matter much. Taxi driver filled thier taxi's full. They drove VW vans
customized with extra seats for optimium filling. So after a couple of times with customers, they had plenty
of money for gas.
We did not swim here, to tired I guess.
Please enjoy the pictures as well as the links that I have provided.
